STEP 2: Rehydration & Tanning (Months 2–3)
– Salt-cured hides are first soaked in water, sometimes with added bactericides, to rehydrate them and remove any remaining dirt, blood, and salt.
– Once rehydrated, the hides are placed in a solution of water, salt, and acid (commonly formic or sulfuric acid). This “pickling” process opens the skin's fibers and prepares them to absorb tanning agents.
– After pickling, the hides are neutralized to bring the pH back to a safe level. This prevents damage to the skin and ensures optimal results during the tanning stage.
– Tanning agents — such as chrome salts, vegetable tannins, or synthetic chemicals — are then applied. These agents bond with the collagen in the hide, preserving it permanently and preventing decay.
– Once tanned, special oils are added to keep the hide flexible and soft after tanning. – The tanned hide is stretched and dried as needed (rug, mount, or leather goods). – Finishing touches may include shaving, softening, and trimming.
STEP 3: Final Preparation for Export (Month 4–6)
– Once the tanning process is complete, the treated skins are carefully combined and packed into crates alongside the client’s already dip-and-packed horns and skulls.
– All export permits are being applied for through Nature Conservation.
– The complete crate is then transferred to the export/shipping company for processing.
– At this point, the shipping company contacts the client directly with a shipping quotation. Once the client approves and accepts the quote, the shipment is scheduled and dispatched to its destination.
